This Völkel ‘Tap and Die Set’ is of the highest quality, manufactured from High Speed Steel, and covers the most popular metric thread sizes M3-M12. The actual sizes that this set covers are: 3mm x 0.5, 4mm x 0.7, 5mm x 0.8, 6mm x 1.0, 8mm x 1.25, 10mm x 1.5 and 12mm x 1.75. These are metric course (standard) thread sizes. This set is for making right handed threads. This Völkel Tap & Die Set includes a High Speed Steel (HSS) tap set of 3 and 1 circular die per size listed above. Also included is the required adjustable bar type tap wrench and diestock to drive the taps and dies in the set by hand. In addition, a ratchet wrench is supplied (for use with 3mm to 10mm taps), as well as a handy metric pitch gauge and screwdriver. The tap sets of 3 are manufactured from high quality High Speed Steel (HSS), conform to DIN 352 and the threads have been precision ground. Each set of 3 taps comprises of x1 Taper tap (also known as the ‘first’ tap), x1 Second tap (also known as the ‘intermediate’ tap) and x1 Plug tap (also known as the ‘bottoming’ or ‘third’ tap). These DIN taps are full form which means that they will cut full threads. The High Speed Steel circular dies are manufactured to DIN 223 and are supplied solid. The dies are all on a 25 x 9mm outside diameter. The adjustable bar type tap wrench fits all the taps in the set. It has steel handles and a zinc diecast body. The diestock is 25 x 9mm and fits all the dies included in the set. This is manufactured from zinc diecast. Supplied in a strong metal index case with lift-up lid. In addition, the metal case is supplied in an outer Völkel carton for added protection. This tap and die set offers a comprehensive, high quality and compact metric HSS threading tool set that is very useful in any garage, workshop or engineering facility. First impressionsEach 3 stage cutter Tap and each Die seems to be made of very high quality and precision made HSS German steel, from M3 to M12. However the hold for the Tap and Dies sets seem a bit cheap, and not very big, but I assume will be strong enough for long term use. The box is made of painted sheet steel. The die sizes can not be adjusted as there is no gap in them for very fine adjustment of the cutting action. Some do have it, some don’t need it.This set was originally priced as £200 reduced to £94.63. If they last after years and years of use then I will be very happy with that, and they have performed brilliantly so far. I had a job to do and the taps performed very well indeed and after 15 M5 holes had been threaded in 5mm mild steel, upon inspection I found the tap set of 3, were still as new and no sign of wear could be seen, even with a magnifiying glass. (Please don’t forget to use a cutting oil, and turn cut back and forth bit by bit, in small amounts each time, to ensure a long life of your Taps and Die’s). Having done some reasearch on the price of Taps and Die sets, good ones (HSS) can cost as much as £300 or more just for a single small Die. There are Tap and Die sets that cost £1000’s to buy, and so this excellent set for only £94.63 is a fantastic bargain and I recommend getting it. However, what would be nice would be to have the required HSS drills set to complement the Tap sets. The reason is because most mm size drill sets come in 1mm and 1/2 mm size incriments, and for some taps you will need non standard drill sizes. e.g. 3.3mm for the M4 tap, 4.2mm drill for the M5 tap, 6.75mm drill for the M8 tap, 10.25mm drill for the M12 tap. Therefore you may prefer to check out the complete Drill,Tap & Die set by Volkel at around £164 from Amazon instead. If you use the wrong size drills you will certainly risk jamming or even breaking the Tap in the hole, no matter how careful you are, or how much the Tap cost. Don’t take that risk.

Exceptional Quality For MoneyBrought this tap and die set for my Husband, he commented on how pricey the Volkel set was, I am a firm believer you only get what you pay for. This set proved my point. The set was in a robust metal box, and the quality of the taps and dies were excellent, my husband commented what a pleasure they were to use, making his job a lot easier. Once finished the quality of the thread was very clean and there was no problem with threading on the nut at all. Excellent bit of kit Thank you Volkel.

Good brand, potential budget qualityVery comprehensive set, the taps seem fine and near the volkel brand. The dies do not, not sure why. So far I find the first die I used for a run of work to be very fragile and I’ve had to order a new one. (Not volkel and from elsewhere). I’ve used volkel a lot before but always bought prices individually as needed. They have always born the brand mark and performed well previously. I feel this set would suit a home workshop or garage, not heavy or regular use. The holders are fine but also seem a bit budget. Comes in a great sturdy case and I’m hoping I just got unlucky with the M6 die and that the rest won’t let me down.

Does the job , flawlessly!Bought to tap 10mm steel floor to bolt down heavy equipment. Tapped several holes , and every hole tapped flawlessly with bolts tightening firmly. Not really had chance to test the rest of the taps/dies , but for my experience so far , i would highly recommend for the price !
