Just right for my medium sized gardenVery straightforward to assemble, haven’t used it yet, bought it in readiness for the spring

Not nearly as bad as the reviews sayAfter I had ordered this from Amazon I got worried when I read so many bad reviews. However, I kept optimistic and when it arrived everything was there and it was relatively easy to assemble. I got it in early Spring when my old corded Flymo hover burned out so this is my first cordless. It took three mows to do all my lawns for the first cut of the year, each time stepping down a notch on the cutting height. The cutting level did not slip as some reviews say. I was very pleased with the effect; the wheels and roller produce a satisfying tramline effect which tends to fade to smoothness in a few days. We have a lot of lawn but I have worked out how to do it all in just two charges of the battery. Each mow takes about 35 minutes to run down after which it takes 4 to 5 hours to fully recharge the batteries. This is the main downside (the instruction book says 2 hours) as you have to plan enough time to recharge in combination with the weather and your own schedule. The batteries do stay charged for at least a week which is how frequently I try to do the mowing. It is true that you have to set the cutting height so as not to stress the motor or it will jam with grass and stop and the battery run down too quickly, so frequent mowing keeping the grass short is the key to happy mowing with this model. I have had it about 3 months now and am happy. We shall see how it measures up in the longer term.

AppallingBought this mower back at the end of 2020 but didn’t get to use it until spring 2021 where I found both batteries would not charge and were completely dead. I contacted Amazon and I received a replacement which did work up until this weekend. I haven’t used the mower this year as the summer had the grass brown and then I had my new garden done last month. The grass has taken and now needs a cut so I went to charge the batteries last night and only one of them is working with the other completely dead. I’ve tried all night and this morning looking for replacement batteries and cannot find anything. With some of other battery prices I’m thinking I may just have to purchase a brand new mower but I highly doubt it will be cordless now. Very disappointed as I’m not sure even if I got 5 cuts out of it or not.UPDATE:So I realised that I was still within my 2 year guarantee period so I called Flymo and explained my situation. They were very helpful and sent me out 2 new replacement batteries that arrived the next day, so giving them 2 extra stars for the brilliant services. I’m praying that these new batteries do last me longer this time though!

Good mower at a sensible priceThis 38cm mower with a 1600W engine will be suitable for medium sized lawns. It is advertised as a folding model, but the levers to fold the handle down are very stiff. The thickness of the plastic is not convincing, however the weight and maneuverability is good, so is the grass catcher basket.Lets see whether it will last as long as my previous Bosch mower, 20 years, until the motor bearings go.

GREAT FOR SMALL GARDENUsed for the first time and found this Flymo perfect for my small garden. Easy to raise/lower the blade and to clean after use. Noise level acceptable. Grass box not used because it was difficult to assemble unlike previous Flymo’s I’ve owned. Worked well without the grass box which is now assembled and ready for use next time grass needs cutting. [Fitting the handles together was not a problem. Printed instructions were useful as diagrams were a little unclear.]

a good little mowerThis mower was very easy to put together – less than 10 minutes, possible made easier because the mower it replaced was a similar model. Also I did not understand other reviewers problems with replacement blades. One of the reasons I like this mower is because it has a metal blade: this means you can take it off and sharpen it; something I had been doing with my old one (bought second hand from a car boot) for 8 years (and I have kept the old blade as a spare) therefore meaning one does not need a replacement blade, but talking of spares, whilst Flymo appeared to be out of stock of replacement blades there are plenty of non Flymo blades available that will fit a flymo.

Good cutting areaOnly having a small lawn, wasn’t in need of a big mower to replace the small one that just broke, however this was cheaper than a smaller one I was looking at so decided to go for it. Set up wasn’t too hard, but it wasn’t completely straight forward either. It feels quite sturdy when made and can withstand a bit of throwing around. It’s not very light and can be a little clunky to manoeuvre around, but it’s manageable. The cutting area is greater than on the old machine, so less strides of the lawn needed, and the collection box is very generous so I needed half the emptying of my old machine. It’s not cutting as close to my edges as before (I have fences and grass up to them so no edges I can cut over) due to the wheels, so I’ll definitely need to use the strimmer more. The cable length is good, though I still have to use an extension cable due to where my plugs are in the house. The handle is quite high, higher than my previous. Being 5ft6 it’s ok for me, but can see it being a little tall if you’re shorter than that. Biggest minus for me is the adjustable blade height – I was under the impression this would be easy to use, but it’s not! It’s very stiff and I had to ask a friend to adjust it for me. Maybe it will get easier over time. That adjustment lever also doesn’t feel sturdy and I feel that if anything is going to break that’s the bit that will. Was a good deal for me at £90. Not sure I’d want to pay more.

Light and easy to store in a small spaceThe mower came almost fully assembled – just had to put the handle and grassbox together then attach the handle to the machine. All fairly easy, with the exception of the grassbox. While not really difficult, it is a bit fiddly as the two halves (which simply clip together) are quite flexible until assembled, and you have to get all the clips and lugs lined up correctly before you simply clip it together. Took me a couple of goes to get it right, but once assembled it’s quite sturdy. In use, it is light and easy to handle. I like the either-handed power switch/levers as I can take either hand off the controls to manipulate the cable as I go. The grassbox holds a good amount of clippings and attaches quite securely and easily to the mower. It even has a handy little indicator built-in to show when it is getting full. As mowers go, it is also reasonably quiet (probably as there are no gears etc to generate mechanical noise – the blade is simply bolted onto the motor spindle). There is a 5-position cutting height adjuster, comprising a single lever which raises/lowers all four wheels by an equal amount. I have seen other reviews saying this won’t stay in any of the higher positions and slips back into position 1 (the lowest) in use. I have had no such issues at all – possibly the mechanism is slightly different on some of the other models (mine is a 34cm corded machine).Cutting results are fine – there is a roller between the rear wheels which does a passable job of creating “stripes” as you mow if that’s your preference. The mower is easy to clean after use – just a quick brush over underneath to remove any accumulated clippings. All the above mark it in my book as a good mower, but it has another trick up its sleeve – when you have finished mowing the handles are quickly unlatched, laid flat and then relatched. The whole mower can then be simply stood on end (there is even a stowage hook on the grassbox) so it takes up a very small amount of floorspace in your shed or garage.Negatives? It would be nice to have a slightly longer mains cable. I haven’t measured it but it’s only just long enough to reach to the far end of our not-very-big lawn. Flymo also claim in their bumf that it can easily be wheeled around in the stowed “small footprint” configuration – in my experience this is only partially true – you can indeed wheel it around but the grassbox will fall off its clever stowage hook if you do.Overall I fully recommend this mower (34cm corded model) for anyone with small-ish lawns.
